After American troops liberated Wiltz, Luxembourg in 1944, the townspeople were finally able to celebrate Saint Nicholas Day again after five years of Nazi occupation. Soldiers from the 28th Infantry Division organized a special event for the children, with Corporal Richard Brookins playing Saint Nick, riding in a jeep and handing out treats. Just ten days later, the Battle of the Bulge began, and the soldiers left Wiltz. Grateful for their kindness, the town began an annual "American St. Nick" celebration in 1947, retracing Brookins' route. Brookins only learned of this tradition in 1977, when he was invited back and honored as a hero.
